Children in a classroom learning Hebrew and about the state of Israel at the Ilaniah Children's Village, an orphanage supported by JDC with UJA funds. It cared for children, ages 6-16, who were orphaned as a result of German atrocities. The children came from central and eastern Europe, many of them from Romania. At the home, the children recovered from malnutrition and general poor health due to poor living conditions in German DP camps. The children also prepared for immigration to Israel. The Dutch government was generous to offer its land for this home and the Dutch people in the area gave the children a very warm and friendly recepetion, bringing gifts and cheering when they arrived. Children did well here and returned to normalcy.
