U.S. troops Rout Japanese from Aitape, New Guinea. American assault troops splash across a shallow stream, near Aitape where they formed small patrol groups to seek out Japanese defenders of the coastal base on Northern Guinea U.S. Aushidous forces storming ashore. At Aitape and at two points flanking Hollandia, to the west on April 5 22, 1944, gaining control of an additional 150 miles streton of the Northern New Guinea coast for the Allies. Supplementary landings six days later aided in blocking ascape routes for an estimated 60.000 Japanese Troops entraped in that area of the Southwest Pacific island. NI 4804
