Chinese use American flame throwers at Tengchung. Crouching behind a pile of stone blasted from the ancient walls of Tengchung, a Chinese soldier (left) peers past an old wagon wheel at a pillbox still held by the Japanese. He has just used his American-flame thrower, and a rifleman (right) gives him support while the grass still burns in the rubble beneath the strongpoint. A few minutes later a spurt of flame exploded from a supply of grenades in the pillbox, defending the remaining defenders. Tengchung was freed by troops of the Chinese Expeditionary Force on September 14, 1944, after American planes had blasted entrances in its walls and dropped flame throwers and other arms to the assault forces.
