U.S. and Chinese engineers span salween. Lieutenant Quan Y. Ching (center) of Hawaii, an American of Chinese descent and an officer of the U.S. Army Y-Force Operations Staff, supervises construction of the Hweitung bridge across the Salween River in southwestern China. American and Chinese engineering skill made possible the construction of the bridge in record time. It replaces one which was destroyed when the Japanese invaded the area in 1942. A foot bridge served the Chinese temporarily before this heavy suspension bridge was built. Bridge building is one of many tasks performed by the Y-Force which is aiding Chinese expeditionnary forces in this part of China. NI 9242
