Modern equipment used in repairing Burma Road. Dressed in the costume of his ancestors, but using a modern American air compressor, a Chinese worker drills rock to widen a section of the Burma Road in the Salween River area of the southwest China. The compressor unit is in the foreground. U.S. Army engineers are supervising the repair and reconstruction of this important artery, which is the Chinese section of a new land route to be opened between blockaded China and India. An Allied victory over the Japanese major obstacles to the linking of this road whith the new Ledo road in northern Burma. Until the work is completed, however, all U.S. supplies for China must continue to be flown over the Himalaya Mountains by transport plane. NI 9241
