"Bosch van Below. Oranienburg, Sachsenhausen." Waldlager. Photo of the remains of the temporary camp in Below, probably taken in May 1945 shortly after the end of the war. After the clearance of the Sachsenhausen concentration camp, which started on the 20th of April 1945, the inmates trailed on a Death March. In the Below Forest to the north of the town the SS corralled more than 16.000 concentration camp inmates on 23 April 1945 and the following days into a provisional camp partially fenced in with barbed wire. Since there was no shelter in the forest for the prisoners, some built improvised shelters like the ones shown in the picture. Others also dug holes in the ground and lay down in them to be protected from the wind.
