Twelve hundred persons died of starvation in Amsterdam, when the Germans destroyed the country's dikes and flooded Dutch farms with seawater. Before the Allies liberated the Low Countries, American military authorities sent more than 2150 B-17 Flying Fortresses to drop 2500 tons of food to the starving population.
