Allied forces advance in Holland. Reinforcements of U.S. infantry and Canadian tank units trailing light artillery move together toward the front through the town of Zundert in Holland. British forces advancing against the Germans in the Netherlands completely cleared the Scheldt Estuary of the enemy by the liberation of Walcheren Island. The commanding general and the 2,500 remaining defenders of the German garrison of the 15th Century city of Middelburg, principal town on Walcheren, surrendered to 250 empire troops November 7, 1944. The clearing of the Scheldt Estuary opened the way to the liberated Belgian port of Antwerp for the landing of materiel and supplies for the Allies.
