Nazi falsifier earnt millions.
Nazi falsifier earnt millions. One of van Meegeren's drawings in the book he sent to Adolf Hitler with the dedication 'To my beloved Fuhrer'. Van Meegeren's wealth had been question-mark for a long time. Where does he get his millions from? His friends wondered. Beautiful houses, furhished in an extravagant way, parties which costs thousands of guilders; when the Germans ordered the handing on of the thousand guildes, Van Meegeren went to the bank with 4000 of them; the book with his sketches cost him eighty guilders a copy and it was published for thirty. People wondered about him till he started to confess; he had falsified seven Vermeers and sold them for millions, earning about seven and a half million guilder in this way. Here is 'Ball at Londen', especially to please the Fuhrer. Dutch press said 'It is nog surprising that van Meegeren's sentimental allegories of war, dead bodies and mothers appealed to the pathological spirit of Hitler.'
