Believed to be the result of Japanese alarm at recent defeats inflicted by the chinese, a visit of inspection to the scenes of recent hostilities in china was paid by General Sugiyama, the Japanese War Minister. General Sugiyama, Japanese War Minister (left) photographed in Shanghai with General Shunroku Hata, Commander-in-chief of the Japanese forces in central China. Behind is seen Major-General Torashiro Kawabe, chief of staff to General Hata. Kawabe was in command at Liukiaochao on July 8 1937, and ordered the attack which precipitated the present hospilities.
