Anglo-Japanese conference begun to thrash out Thorny Tientsin issues Tokyo, July 1939 With both the Japanese and the British authorities here ready to begin the uch-awaited parleys to settle the thorny issues raised at Tientsin by the shielding of four terrorist assassins of the Chiang Kai-shek regime in the British Concession and the Japanese blockado of the concession, Foreign Minister Hachiro Arita and British Ambassador Sir Robert Craigie met in the former's official residence (above) at nine o'clock this morning to begin the preliminary talk. In a statement to the press yesterday Mr. Arita announced that Japan's fixed objectives had been sanctioned by the Emperor. It is understood that they will include the demand hat Britain cease its policy of aiding the Chiang Kai-shek regime. NI 1560
