De tekst bij deze opname luidt als volgt: Completed: 1929 Gross Tonnage 51,731 tons Dimensions: 938 ft. x 102ft. Depth 48ft. Engines: Twelve steam turbines, single-reduction geared Screws: Quadruple Watertight bulkheads: Fourteen Decks: Seven Normal speed: 27.50 knots (She attained a speed of 28.50 knots on het trial runs) Officers and crew: 944 Passenger accomodation: 723 first, 600 tourist and 908 third class Maiden voyage: Bremen - Southampton - Cherbourg - New York on July 16, 1929. Sistership: Europa. The Bremen won the Blue Ribon from the Cunard Line's Mauretania on her maiden voyage by making the run from Cherbourg to Ambrose Lighthouse in 4 days, 17 hours and 14 minutes at a speed of 27.83 knots. She was the first ship to be built with a bulbous bow created by her German designers to increase the speed. Her hull plating was also built in a paradoxial way that was forward to the aft overlapping, a method that was to increase speed by half a knot. Engaged in the Bremen-Southampton-Cherbourg-New York run, The Bremen consumed 830 tons of oil every 24 hours and she was equipped with anti roling tanks. Her funnels were later raised 15ft. because of lingering smoke on the boat deck. In February 1939 the Bremen passed through the Panama Canal while on a pleasure cruise around the continent of South America and is the largest ship ever passed through the canal. Anticipating war between Great Britain and Germany the Bremen slipped out of New York on the night of August 30, 1939 without passengers and made for the port of Murmank, Russia, by way of Scotland and Norway, thus avoiding the English Channel. She arrived at Murmansk on September 6 and proceeded on to Bremen on December 10. During this elusive voyage she had been spotted by the British submarine Salmon, but was fortunate to escape from being sunk. On March 18, 1941, the majestic Bremen was set afire by one of her crew members and was scuttled. She was later stripped down to the waterline and the remainder of the hulk was broken up by 1953.
