Pick-a-back planes captured at Bernburg. This air photo shows pick-a-back aircraft captured by troops of the First U.S. Army April 16, 1945, when the airfield at Bernburg, Germany, was taken. The pick-a-back aircraft consisted of a Ju-88 witrh a FW-190 fighter mounted on its back. The combination was one of numerous desperate measures taken by the Germans to stall off defeat. The Ju-88 in the foreground has had the FW-190 removed from the mounting. The small planes were carried as far as possible to save fuel and give the lighter plane wider flight range. Ju-88 gecombineerd met FW-190. Junkers 88.
