Braunlage Forest atrocity discovered. Another German atrocity was discovered by the First Infantry Division of the First U.S. Army in its advance through the Braunlage Forest southeast of Bornburg, Germany. These Russians, Italians, Poles and Frenchmen, clad in striped prison garb, were shot in the head by the Germans before they fled from the area. Bornburg was captured April 17, 1945, and the atrocity was discovered by troops mopping up in the area.
