Nordhausen rests in peace. Flowers and a cross mark a single grave in the foreground while white markers indicate the mass graves (background) of slave workers who died from starvation, discase and torture at "Lager-Nordhausen", Nazi slave labor camp where an estimated 9,000 persons lost their lives in 1944. When troops of the First U.S. Army entered the camp near Nordhausen April 10, 1945, they were confronted with hundreds of dead an dying. The American officer in charge immediately ordered the leading citizens of the V-bomb manufacturing town to dig mass graves and bury the rotting dead.
