Cologne captured by U.S. troops. Soldiers of the First U.S. Army take cover in doorways and behind a building in Cologne as they locate a Nazi sniper during the battle for the Rhineland capital, seized March 6, 1945. Bomb and shell-shattered Cologne, third largest city in Germany, was cleared of the enemy following an 11-day offensive during which American troops pushed forward 20 miles.
