The rise and fall of the Nazi state. Part V: The Disintegration of Germany. - Hungry Germans Loot Their Own Trains - A crowd of hungry Germans board a freight train that was halted by an Allied air attack in Frankfurt on Main and rummaged through the cars looking for food and clothing. In the general breakdown of communications and civil authority, it was difficult for the German population to obtain even the small amount of food allowed them by their rationing system. The food either could not be transported or else it had been destroyed in the bitter battles that raged throughout the country. Those who lived in the country were better off than city dwellers whose homes were uninhabitable and whose food supply was uncertain at best. Gradually the stern admonitions of the German Nazi authorities ceased to have power to hold the people in chock. Disobeying orders, citizens roke into storehouses and trains, looted stores and stole abandoned supplies to get enough food for themselves.
