Nazi troops captured near Nordhausen. German prisoners-of-war, taken by troops of the First U.S. Army near Nordhausen, wait to be removed to the rear. Some of the captives (foreground) wash in a small stream. Nordhausen, occupied April 10, 1945, was the site of an enormous underground assembly plant of V-2 rocket bombs. It was also the site of a concentration camp for slave V-2 workers which was one of the most appalling examples of Nazi bestiality yet encountered by the Allies. American soldiers who expected to encounter armed defenders of the war plant were met instead by masses of dead and dying slave workers.
