Civilian rifles collected in Bonn. These rifles were turned in by civilians in Bonn, Germany. When Bonn was captured March 9, 1945, by the First Division, First U.S. Army, 52,000 persons stayed behind in the city. Deputy Burgemaster Horst, appointed by the Nazi mayor who fled across the Rhine before the city's capture, told Allied Military Government officials that the civilians 'have for the present an adequate supply of coal, brickettes and wood for household purposes.'
