U.S. troops seal off Nazis in Ruhr pocket.
U.S. troops seal off Nazis in Ruhr pocket. Truckloads of the 10,000 Nazi soldiers taken by the 99th Division of the First U.S. Army in the sealed-off pocket in the Ruhr area of Germany are pictured April 16, 1945, as they are driven to a rear area. Three major generals were included in the huge bag of prisones. Many of the German soldiers were remnants of the 116th Panzer Division,. It was officially announced April 17, 1945, that the Ruhr pocket had yielded a total of 309,484 prisoners - more than twice the original maximum estimate, of the enemy troops it was supposed to contain.
