Duisburg, on the juncture of the Rhine and the Ruhr, utilized thousands of miles of waterways leading to the North Sea and can handle barges of 1,000 tons and ocean-going vessels of 15,000 tons. The center of Ruhr heavy industry, its plants include the Krupp steel and iron works, armanent factories, synthetic oil plants, coke ovens and the largest tar distillation plant in Germany.
