Bombed-out Berlin buildings line capital streets. Bombed-out buildings line the streets of Berlin in this view taken on May 2, 1945, the day the German capital was captured by Red Army troops after a bitter, eleven-day battle. More than 70,000 German troops laid down their arms in surrender on the day Berlin fell to the Russians. On May 8, U.S. President Harry S. Truman and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill announced the unconditional surrender of Nazi Germany to the Allies, while Soviet Marshal Josef Stalin proclaimed victory one day later.
