The rise and fall of the Nazi State. Part V: The disintegration of Germany. Even old men must fight the lost battle - Two members of the Volkssturms or civilian army, weary and haggard old men, await transportation to an allied prisoner-of-war encampment after their capture near Saarlautern, Germany. Called to duty only three weeks before their capture, the men were dressed in a mixture of air force and army issue uniforms and many of them were phisically unfit for combat. Untrained and frequently badly armed, these men were thrown into the breach as thousands of veteran German troops were captured daily by the advancing Allied armies.
