Belgians follow snowy road to home.
Belgians follow snowy road to home. Belgian refugees use a wagon to transport themselves and their belongings back to their home near Lierneux after soldiers of the First U.S. Army routed the Nazis from the town on the northern flank of the enemy salient into Belgium. Shals and blankets are used to protect the woman and child from the bitter cold and snow which has blanketed battle areas on the Western Front. Military Government sections of the U.S.. Army began helping civilians to evacuate danger zones when the Germans launched their counter-offensive between Monchau, Germany, and Echternach, Luxembourg, December 16, 1944. Under the direction of U.S. Lieutenant Colonel H.P. Cain, 10,000 men, women and children were quickly removed from approximately 50 communities in an area of 10 by 20 miles.
