American troops and armor surge to Belgian battle sector. U.S. Troops and armored vehicles fill a street on the outskirts of Malmedy, as American reinforcements surge to the front to halt the Nazi offensive begung December 16, 1944. Dispatches from Supreme Headquarters covering activities up to December 26 reported U.S. troops had retaken the towns of Cincy and Celles, the extreme western points of the German stab into the U.S. Lines. Fighting in the biting cold of Belgium and on snow-covered hills in Luxembourg, American soldiers had stopped the German counter-offensive withing four miles of the Meuse and some 50 miles inside Belgium, by December 27.
