U.S. Field Artillery Battalion supports infantry attack. The 38th Field Artillery Battalion nof the First U.S. Armyopens fire with a 105mm. howitzer against enemy positions in Rochorath and Krinkel, Belgium. The artillery action was in direct support of an infantry advance to the Belgian towns, east of Malmedy and about three miles from the German frontier. By February 1, 1945, Lieutenant General Courtney Hodges'man head broken into the main defenses of the Siegfried Line and crossed the first row of anti-tank obstacles and pillboxes eleven miles southeast of Monschau, Germany. Northeast of Monschau, on the northernmost sector of the First Army Front, positions were consolidated around Kosternich, 1 1/2 miles west of the great Urfftal reservoir. East of Monschau, resistance was heavy, but hte Americans took the villages of Eicherscheid and Imgenbroisch February 1, 1945.
