Cherbourg honors heroes who died during Nazi occupation.
Cherbourg honors heroes who died during Nazi occupation. This is a general view of the crowd which packed the Place General de Gaulle in Cherbourg, France, to pay homage to French civilians in the great French port who were killed by the enemy during the Nazi occupation. Cherbourg was the first large French city to be liberated. Less than a month after initial Allied landings June 6, 1944, the Americans wrested Cherbourg from the Nazis June 27.
