Allied naval vessel speeds to aid of disabled U.S. plane. An Allied naval vessel steams to the aid of a disabled American fighter plane, brought down to an emergency landing in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of France after supporting landings of the Allied Expeditionary Force in northern France. Stripes like those on the tail and wings of the plane are now worn by all AEF aircraft to enable friendly forces to make quick identification of Allied planes, gliders and other aerial weapons. Eleven-thousand Allied warplanes supported the initial landings in France, on June 6, 1944, of American, British and Canadian ground troops who breached German coastal fortifications during the first few days of attack.
