Americans attend sunday services in chapel in Normandy.
1944
Americans attend sunday services in chapel in Normandy. American soldiers leave a small chapel in Normandy after attending services the first Sunday after landing on the north coast of France on June 6, 1944. Although the chapel was scarred by the fighting in which the Germans tried desperately to stem the Allied advance, the chapel bells nevertheless rang out for the Allied troops who liberated the town. By June 26, the enemy had surrondered the deep-water port of Cherbourg, on the tip of the Cotentin Peninsula, to the overwhelming force of the Allied drive.
