American soldiers repatriated on day. Allied forces landed on French north coast. Smiles wreath the faces of American soldiers who reached the U.S. on the Swedish liner Gripsholm on June 6, 1944, the day on which British, American and Canadian troops landed on the north coast of France to establish the first Allied beachheads in Western Europe. The Gripsholm docked at an Eastern U.s. port carrying 125 prisoners of war and civilians released from German internment upon an exchange of Allied and German war prisoners.
