Dead U.S. commander rests among ruins. Surrounded by flowers and draped with the Stars and Stripes, the body of an American officer, killed as he led his men in the final attack on St. Lo, rests among the ruins of the Church of the Holy Cross in the town. The body of the commander was carried forward by the advancing U.S. troops and laid to rest here while they drove the remaining Germans out. The war-battered Normandy town fall to U.S. troops July 18, 1944.
