Captured German soldiers pass Cherbourg city hall. German soldiers, captured by Allied troops during the Battle of Normandy, march past the city hall of the French port of Cherbourg on their way to a prisoner-of-war- camp. One wounded prisoner gets a ride in a small bicycle trailer, pulled by a comrade. Beneath the U.S. British and French flags, French inhabitants watch the departure of the Germans under whose rule they lived for four years. When the Cherbourg peninsula was completely liberated by the Allied Expeditionary Force on July 1, 1944, more than 42,500 prisoners had surrendered to American troops.
