German prisoners in Normandy searched by Canadian captors. Hands in air, German soldiers captured in the Normandy village of Gruchy are searched for hidden weapons by Canadian troops of the Allied forces during their advance to liberate the inland seaport of Caen in northern France. Since the first Allied landings on the beaches of Normandy on June 6, 1944, 54,000 Germans had surrendered by July 11, to the overpowering strength of U.S., British and Canadian forces in France.
