Ready to roll in Southern France. Line upon line of mobile equipment awaits loading onto landing craft somewhere in Italy August 8, 1944, for shipment to the beachheads of Southern France. Landed by the greates naval fleet ever employed in the Mediterranean and preceded by wave upon wave of paratroppers and glidermen, American, British and French forces under command of General sir Henry Maitland Wilson, Supreme Commander of the Mediterranean Theater, landed in the South of France August 15, 1944. After one week of fighting, Allied troops had liberated more than 5,000 square kilometers of French territory and had captured more tha 14,000 prisoners, among them three German generals.
