Captured German colonel on way to allied prisoner-of-war camp. A German lieutenant colonel (right, foreground), captured by the Allies in the St. Lo area of northern Franc,e smiles at a photographer on the deck of a U.S. LST (landing ship-tank) vessel carrying him across the English channel to a prisoner-of-war camp. A U.S. Coast Guard ensign is at the left. Since the first landing on the beaches of Normandy on June 6, 1944, the Allied Expeditionary Force, by July 11, had captured 54,000 German soldiers, including hundreds of officiers. They capitulated to superior Allied strength despite enemy High Command orders to stand or die.
