U.S. Army diving unit helps clear rivers in liberated France. This U.S. Army diving unit is busy clearing a French river of ines and other obstructions to help in the reconstruction of the liberated area and to speed transportation of supplies to Allied forces. The unit works from an LCVP (landing craft-vehicle, personnel). Comrades man the air pump in the foreground. Salvage units of the U.S. Navy under the command of Commodore William S. Sullivan are working to clear the port of Cherbourg, liberated by the Allies on June 26, to provide the Allied Expeditionary Force with a first-rate port. On July 10, Commodore Sullivan praised the cooperation of the French underground in this work. The underground kept close watch on all German activities in the port and passed on the information to Allied officers.
