Sniper fire halts Paris celebration.
Sniper fire halts Paris celebration. A Parisian mother (foreground) shields her child as the wine of Nazi bullets turns cheers into screams and soldiers and civilians crouch for protection during one of the Paris street battles that followed the liberation of the city augustus 25,1944. In isolated sections of the French capital, German snipers fired into gay crowds celebrating their freedom. Many women and children were injured in Notre Dame when Nazis, dressed as civilians, attempted to kill General Charles de Gaulle when he attended thanksgiving services in the famous cathedral.
