Bastille Day rites for French patriot-priest killed by Nazi mine in Normandy.
Bastille Day rites for French patriot-priest killed by Nazi mine in Normandy. Fishing boats in the harbor of Barfleur fly Tricolors at half mast as the Norman village commemorates the death of a French patriot and priest, Abbe Jules Gaslonde, as well as the 155th anniversary of French independence on Bastille Day, July 14, 1944. Abbe Gaslonde, former vicar of a village near St. Lo who defied Nazi orders to hang the Tricolor in his church, was killed by a mine left by retreating Nazis in Normandy. The priest was returning on his bicycle after administering last rites to three French civilians killed by another Nazi mine.
