French civilians welcome U.S. troops. French civilians give an enthusiastic welcome to American troops sweeping under decorations strung up in the main street in Fougeres in appreciation of liberation. Fougeres was captured by U.S. troops during the lightning advance to the Loire which cut off the whole of Brittany with its three great ports and U-boat bases of Brest, Lorient and St. Nazaire.
