Cherbourg is restored to the French.
Cherbourg is restored to the French. Allied flags wave above American soldiers and French civilians at the ceremony, on June 27, 1944, at the Cherbourg Town Hall, that marked the fulfillment of the city's liberation from the Germans when Major General J. Lawton, commander of the U.S. Seventh Corps in France, turned over the municipal administration of Cherbourg to Major M. Paul Reynaud. Allied civil affairs officers will aid the municipal authorities in feeding the civilians populace, community sanitation and the restauration of normal life. Stressing their desire to work with French organizations civil affairs officers turned over releif supervision to the Sisters of the Poor and other local charities; labor was ......... for repair of habor facilities by the local employment agency; and the Cherbourg Chambers of Commerce, thrown out of its building by the Germans, returned to its own offices.
