Cherbourg citizens return to their homes. Little groups of Frenchmen formed all over the city of Cherbourg as word spread that the Nazis had surrendered their stronghold to leberating American forces. On June 27, 1944, citizens of Cherbourg finally returned to their homes. Some found their houses intact, others found decbris ans slain Nazi soldiers littering their front yards as evidence of the fierce street fighting which took place before the Nazis were forced to give up.
