Germans surrender in St. Nazaire. The leaders of the German garrison at St. Nazaire give the Nazi salute as they surrender 28,000 troops to the 66th U.S. Infantry Division May 8, 1945. The actual occupation took place early the following morning. Sining for the Allies was Colonel John W. Keating, 66 th Division Chief of Staff (right). Major Adalbert Engelken, chief of staff for Major General Werner Junck, commander of the German garrison, standing in the center of the German group at left, signed for the Nazis. Colonel Keating represented Major General ....... F. Krammer, Commander of the 66th and other Allied forces in the St. Nazaire and Lorient pockets, previously, the German forces at Lorient had capitulated. The Channel ports were defended bitterly by the Nazis as the war moved from the Normandy beaches deep into France, on into Germany and over the Rhine.
