SPECIAL PARACHUTES ACTS AS BRAKE FOR U.S. GLIDERS Its speed checked by the drag of a lo foot (3.3. meters) parachute, a CG-4A glider of the U.S. Army Air Forces comes in for a test landing at an airport in the midwestern U.S. The parachute, which acts as a giant brake, enables the glider to land quickly in small areas, thereby reducing its vulnerability to enemy fire and at the same time making possible operations in difficult terrain. The chute is contained in a special pack attached to a glider's tail cone and is opened by a ripcord in the cockpit. It can be kept open as long as needed, then dropped by means of another cockpit control. The glider is one of a type used for transporting troops in airborne operations, and the new device will materially aid such maneuvers in the future.
