HAVOCS ASSAULT BELGIAN RAILROAD YARDS Leaving smoke from fires started at Aersholt, the important rail center 30 miles northeast of Brussels, Belgium, spiralling up to actual bombing level, A-20 Havoc light bombers of the Ninth U.S. Air Force wheel for home after a heavy daylight assault May 7, 1944. Dwarfing all previous bombing records in history, a grand total of 81,000 tons were dropped by Allied bombers on Hitler's Europe during the month of April, 1944. Of these, 48,000 tons were dropped by the United States armadas. The Strategic Air Force (the heavies) established a new peak in daylight raids with 39,000 tons. Marauders and Havoc medium and light bombers of the Ninth U.S. Air Force unloaded nearly 8,000 tons.
