Boeing 'B-29 Superfortress'. 'A Superfortress tests its wings on Saipan. Ground crewmen at the new American Superfortress base on Saipan Island in the Marianas, watch one of the giant planes take off on a dawn familiarization flight. Practice flights such as this preceded the Saipan-based Superfortress attacks on Tokyo on November 23 1944, first in a new phase of U.S. air assaults to bring the war to the Japanese homeland.'
