North-American 'B-25 Mitchell' bommenwerper. CANNON ON U.S. MEDIUM BOMBER. The bomber is about to take off for target practice at a U.S. Army Air Forces tactical center in the Southeastern U.S. Armed with the cannon, the heaviest in use in Alllied aircraft, bombers of this type have wreaked havoc upon enemy shipping, airfields, tanks and fortitications in the Pacific and Mediterranean theaters. During one raid over the Central Pacific, cannon-carrying Mitchells sank a 4,000-ton Japanese freighter, probably sank a destroyer and several smaller craft, damaged enemy aircraft and wrecked large installations on a Japanese base.
