FIRST BRITAIN TO RUSSIA SHUTTLE MISSION.
FIRST BRITAIN TO RUSSIA SHUTTLE MISSION. Captain Howard Hively of Ward, West Virginia, gives the goodluck sign before taking off in his P-51 Mustang with the first fighter bomber shuttle mission from England to Russia via Berlin. More than 1000 heavy bombers escorted by P-51 Mustangs of the Eighth U.S.Air Force, attacked Germany's capital 'in great strength' Juni 21, 1944 to launch the new two-way aerial bombardment. The flyers took off from bases in Britain, unloosed their bombs over Germany and then went on to Russia. Refueled and reloaded in Russia, they will take off again, drop more bombs on German military installations and fly back home. P-51 Mustang.
