American rodeo in Italy. Sergeant Steve Stephans (left) of Klamath Falls, Oregon, edges out Corporal Harry Hanson of Chicago, Illinois, to win the Roman chariot race held during the American Red Cross rodeo and "Wild West" show in Foggia Stadium in Southern Italy. The chariots were made from wheels of wrecked fighter and bomber planes and other materials salvaged from junk heaps. All contestants in the three-day show July 4, 5 and 6, 1944, were soldiers of the Allied Fifth Army in Italy or Allied flyers based in Italy.
