U.S. hero Italian campaign visits home. Corporal James D. Slaton, U.S. infantryman who received the Congressional Medal of Honor - highest military award for valor - for heroism during the Allied campaign against the Germans in Italy, visits his wife (left) and his mother at their home in Gulfport in the Southern U.S. State of Mississippi. Corp. Slaton wiped out three enemy machine gun nests and killed six Germans single-handed, near Oliveto, Italy. Corp. Slaton, who is 32 years old, drove a taxi before entering the Army, and is the father of four boys.
