U.S. Forces take over German ports. Captured German submarines are shown on the ways of the Atlas Werke in the harbor of Bremen. At the end of the war in Europe, more than 17 U-boats were under construction at this plant, one of the largest submarine building yards in the world. The submarines were built on a mass production basis with each section being joined to other sections at the final launching way. Little bomb damage is visible in this picture, taken from the giant crane scaffolding above the ways. The crane was used to move sections into place for final assembly.
